Breast Cancer Walk

 Breast Cancer Walk

Students raised $13K for cancer

On Sunday, Oct. 15 the students of Woburn came together to help fight against breast cancer. Over 300 students and friends walked around Horn Pond and raised a total of $12,998.48. This money will be donated to the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Gillete Center for Women’s Cancer.

We would like to thank the following businesses for sponsoring the walk: Cummings Properties; Excel Orthopedics; Lawless Chrysler Jeep; John C. Seaver Plumbing and Heating; Sorriso Technologies, Inc.; Carbone Real Estate; Bay State T-Shirt; Wholesale Printing; Mulrenan Therapy.

We would like to thank the following businesses for their donations: Whole Foods; Russell Farms; Staples; Au Bon Pain; McCall Dentist; Murray Family.

Next year we hope to raise even more money and could use your help again.

Unforeseen connection

Paula Lerner, professional photographer and Belmont resident, began her new project in May 2004 knowing it would have a personal connection. She just wasn’t prepared for how great that connection would ultimately be.

Lerner was recruited by her editor, Deb Murphy, to collaborate on a book about those who walk for a cure for breast cancer. Her mother, stepmother and aunt are all breast cancer survivors, and she said "you don’t do projects like that for the money. You do them because they mean something to you."

The writer and photographer were in attendance at the Avon Walk in Boston, and Lerner remembers thinking that many of the survivors were just about her age.

High spirits at charity walk

GOOD weather and high spirits were just the right factors to guarantee the Breast Cancer Welfare Association's (BCWA's) Pink Challengers Charity Fun Walk started off on the right note.

With these essential factors in place, the event at the Taman Lembah Kiara on a recent Sunday welcomed the participation of 200 people from all walks of life, including breast cancer survivors, in tackling the scenic jogging track at the park.

Participants could choose to walk the 1.5km or the 3km track that led them back to the BCWA pink booth where members of Pink Challengers, recognisable by their bright pink T-shirts, welcomed them with smiles and encouragement to indulge in further activities that had been planned.

Among the activities were lucky draws and fun quizzes in relation to breast cancer awareness, organising chairperson Barbara Delaney said.

There were also food and drink stalls and souvenir booths as well as a music corner where people could donate money by requesting a song.
